Bones-how they fail us
There are two hundred and six bones in our body that build the basic framework of the body. Bones are the basic building structures of the body. It is the bones on which the entire body weight stands. Bones are made of phosphorus, calcium, sodium and other minerals. It also consists of the protein collagen.
Calcium is the main element that is required to strengthen the bones. Vitamin D is also required as it helps in the absorption of calcium by the bones. Most of the bone related disorders that affect an individual are due to the deficiency of one or either of calcium and vitamin D.
Rickets, osteomalacia, osteoporosis and arthritis, are the common disorders associating bones. Thus, for the prevention of such disorders it is advised that one has a diet supplemented with enough calcium and vitamin D. Milk, cheese, some beans and some grains are some of the food items rich in calcium.
